Twink: Gay Lingo Subtype

Twink is a gay classification subtype

Twink is an affectionate nickname that many gay men use to describe young gay males who possess certain features, characteristics and attributes.

There are variations of twinks, which are all part of the larger twink spectrum and will be thoroughly covered in this article.

If you are a gay man, you have probably heard a friend refer to guy with this particular label. In fact, you may have used this term yourself when describing someone’s body type to a friend.

Finally, it is very possible someone has used this label to describe you.

Example twinkie conversations typically go something like this:

“See that guy over there – he is a hot twink!” OR “You are a really cute little twink!”

Sound familiar?

After doing extensive research on the word twink and employing top-notch Internet driven semantic data-mining tools – used to identify common phraseology within the gay culture – Gay Pop Buzz is ready to present a twink taxonomy with subtypes.

Are You a Twink?

If you have wondered if you are a twink, this guide may help you the next time you look into the mirror and ask yourself, which body type am I? Think of this twink guide as a kind of visual blueprint.

Please note that it is entirely possible that you may not fit perfectly into a given category or subtype. In fact, you may be closer to another body type, such as a jock, wolf, otter or bear.

The illustrations appearing here are designed to offer general characteristics and traits – and also for the purposes of fun so please do not take this material too seriously.

Disclaimer: Some may not agree with the use of classifications for gay men. Mister Hollywood certainly respects this however, it needs to be said that these taxonomies do exist in our always colorful gay community. By having working definitions, we help to fill vacuums of misinformation that do nothing more than confuse.

Finally, a fun twink poll has been included so that you can compare your answers with the results of others. Are you ready?

Twink:  General Definition

Generally speaking, twinks can be thought of as a male who is his mid-20’s and has a slender build. Twinks can be short or tall and are usually slender.

Many gay men have incorrectly used the term “Twink” as a descriptor for young gay guys that are thought to be effeminate. This however is an incorrect use of the term. To be an average twink, one must be in their mid-20’s (give or take) and have a slender to medium build with an atypical presentation (aka average).

Effeminate twinks and masculine twinks have their own sub-types, which will be explored shortly.

Twink Examples:

An example of a person who might be considered an average twink is Colton Haynes, the Wichita, Kansas born actor who you have likely seen on shows like the CW’s Arrow.

Another example includes actor Dylan O’Brien, who is a favorite among gay men that are fans of Teen Wolf. In both cases, the guys have slim yet defined builds.

And yet more twinkie like body types include California born Logan Lerman from Glee and Virginia born, Grant Gustin, who is the new Flash on the CW (see Grant Gustin post)

Twinks are cute, attractive and “youngish”.

Twink Taxonomy – Subtypes

Many younger gay men fall within the general classification of “twink” however, their features are such that as a group, require a sub-type. Using our twink taxonomy, we can now place these once uncategorized twinks into one of two sub-types.

These subtypes help with gay somatotyping along the twink spectrum. (FYI – a somatotype is nothing more than a body type).

What follows is a quick review of twink subtypes: Twunks and Glamour Twinks.

Twunks (Muscular Subtype)

An offshoot of a twink is a twunk. Like their close cousin the twink, twunks share some of the same characteristics of a male being and in their late teens to mid-20’s. The main difference however can be found in the size of the male’s body. Twunks typically have a muscular build but are not so massive that they would be considered a jock. Most all twunks are thought of as masculine.

Famous twunks include California born Tyler Posey, who you may have seen on the television series, Teen Wolf. He has a muscular, defined body but it is not overdone. Born in 1991, Posey fits the criterion of a twunk almost perfectly because of his age and his body type.

Yet another Teen Wolf example of a Twunk can be found in Tyler Hoechlin. Born in 1987 in Corona, California, the star just barely fits into this category because of his age and build. In the near future, he will likely progress to a gym bunny, which is a term reserved for guys who are in their late 20’s and older who have a very muscular build (see link to the right).

Glamour Twinks

Glamor-Twinks (Pretty Subtype)

Glamor twinks are men who share the same characteristics as their twink and twunk cousins except glamour twinks are deemed to be pretty. Key features of glamor twinks include the trait of looking well put together.

Many glamour twinks will use a number of cosmetic products to assist them with their personal appearance, including creams, anti-shine products, lip glosses and hair removal products. Some will even go through different kinds of beauty enhancing procedures to help them improve their appearance. A good number of glamor-twinks have the end goal of looking like a movie star or other Hollywood celebrity

A visual example of glamor twinks can be found in Glee actor, Chris Colfer. Born in 1991 in Clovis, California, this male celeb has a somewhat muscular build but has characteristics which some consider to be entry points into the glamor-twink category.

One more glamor-twunk example can be seen in Michael Cera. You have likely watched this Canadian born actor in a number of television shows and movies, including Arrested Development and Super Bad. Born in 1988, the star has been identified as one of 10 feminine male celebrities by Campus Socialite in 2011.

Pups – Naïve Subtype

Pups, generally speaking, are younger gay men (late teens to early 20’s). This twink sub-type is somewhat unique. The key characteristic with a pup is fairly simple – pups have little or no experience within the gay world. In fact, many gay folks consider pups to be naïve to gay life. Guys who are in their late teens to early 20’s and are just coming out fit within the pup realm.

Pups can be large, small, masculine or feminine. It is important to note that pups are not the same as cubs, which is a different category entirely. When you hear the word pup – think young and wet behind the ears.

Examples of a pup might include Michigan born actor Taylor Lautner. Born in 1992, this handsome celebrity fits the physical characteristics of a twunk but can be classified as a pup based on two criteria (for illustrative example purposes only, pretend he is gay).

1. Date of birth

2. Experience in the gay community

As with actual canines, gay human “pups” often whine about how unfair life is and have a somewhat naïve, untainted view on the world – particularly within the gay community.

Twink Book

Inside, you’ll find lots of imagery designed to give you a more well rounded view of Twinks, including their physical build and features.

Final Thoughts

The various gay lingo terms for twinks appearing here are constantly changing. Therefore, it is possible that some readers will not fall into these categories. If this is the case, you may want to visit the link: Jock, Wolf, Otter or Bear appearing earlier in this article.

Note that the word Tweaker does not appear. While this term commonly used as descriptor among gay men, it does not describe a particular body or personality type. Instead, “tweakers” are individuals who use various substances. Many gay men refuse to date tweakers because they are one of 10 types of guys to avoid!

If you want to know more about gay lingo and body types, a great video to stream to your phone, pad or TV is: Adonis Factor appearing above. This documentary explores the multitude of body types used within the larger family of gay communities.
