Male Models Skin Care Tips

Male models are characteristically recognizable because of their glowing skin. In fact, many look so good that it’s tempting to think their photos have been airbrushed. And while this may be true for some, it’s certainly not the case for all.

Upon closer inspection of these hot men, you quickly find out that they have ritualized a very specific skincare routine that yields powerful results.

Here at the blog, we’ve done our research in an effort to better understand how some guys achieve such stunning looks. We spoke to several models off the record and away from their product sponsors to get the real deal on their skin care routines.

Our question was fairly simple: What are you using to keep your face so flawless? Are you using a special mask, peel or organic cleanser? What’s your secret?

It turns out we should have approached the question differently. You see, it’s not what they use on their skin but instead, what they do that keeps them looking so amazingly hot.

And to get into the nitty-gritty, we decided to have a sit-down session with male model consultants Emily Kristina and Brian Hopkins. They represent some of the biggest names on the runway.

What follows are seven things we found out that male models do that might surprise you.

7 male model skin care tips

1. They wash their face only once a day

If you washing your face more than once a day, you might want to stop. That’s because your skin needs to retain a certain amount of its natural oils in order to remain balanced. “Not all oil is bad. Your face needs some to retain moisture,” suggests Kristina.

The advice we were given is to wash only once at night. In the morning, splash your face with some water and then spot dry with a clean towel. Follow up with a toning product, like Anthony Logistics toning pads ($25.00 – $30.00).

2. They are careful about sugar intake

A little sugar here and there isn’t horrible but too much sugar can cause weight issues. But you probably already knew that. What you may not know is that sugar binds to and destroys collagen molecules. You need collagen if you want to have supple, youthful looking skin.

FYI: Sugar also has a drying effect on skin, which can accelerate the formation of wrinkles and lines. Plus, sucrose is thought to speed up aging and cause breakouts.

3. They don’t drink dark sodas

If you are drinking diet sodas, you might be thinking you are doing something healthy. And while it is true that you may be reducing calories, you aren’t doing your face any favors.

Research has shown that dark sodas contains pore clogging properties that age your skin horribly. Worse, many of these drinks are caramelized and have syrups, which rob your skin of their natural elasticity.

“If you must drink a soda, go for the clear ones. They are much better for you and your skin because they don’t have all those toxins in them,” says Hopkins.

4. They sometimes skip sunscreen

You may be thinking this particular point is crazy but here us out. Sunscreens do a great job of protecting you from the sun’s harmful rays but they also can clog your pores.

What we learned is that you don’t plan on being outdoors at all and won’t be exposed to sunlight, you can use a different moisturizer.

“Conventional wisdom holds you need to slap on sunscreen every day. Male models have learned to do this only when required,” suggests Hopkins. He also shared that sunscreens block the body’s ability to create vitamin D – one of the skin’s essential nutrients.

5. They drink a ton of water

You likely have heard of this tip before but there is a reason. Hydration is the number one way to retain elasticity and plumpness. This is particularly true for guys who are thirty and over.

“Most male models drink a gallon or more of water each day,” says Kristina. “And they moisturize at least 2 times a day with a quality product they have invested money into,” adds Hopkins.

Both Christina and Hopkins told us under this point that just because a male model represents a given product, it doesn’t mean they actually use it. In fact, most don’t.

6. They regularly exercise

Yet another point you probably knew but needs to be mentioned. Not only does regular exercise help keep the weight off, it also stimulates collagen growth.

“Exercise is key to their good looks!” says Hopkins. “You don’t have to be a body builder either. Exercise also gets blood flowing, which supplies nutrients to the skin that help to give off that amazing glow,” adds Kristina.

7. They are mindful of alcohol use

The final tip we were given relates to alcohol, which we acknowledge isn’t always easy to avoid. But if you are interested in looking your best, it might be wise to drink sparingly.

“Alcohol contains sugars plus – well – alcohol. Individually these are bad for the skin but when you combine them, it’s double trouble,” says Hopkins. He goes on to add: “An occasional glass of red wine is probably OK but not much more than that.”
