Health Experts Discovered An Incurable Gonorrhea Strain

An Incurable Gonorrhea Strain?!

Health experts have encountered the first case of intreatable super-gonorrhoea.

A report by Public Health England went out Thursday and shared the news that a case of an intreatable form of gonorrhea has been discovered.

In the report, Dr. Gwenda Hughes, the head of PHE’s STI section, said:

“We are investigating a case who has gonorrhea which was acquired abroad and is very resistant to the recommended first line treatment. This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics.”

More specifically, a man, who’s identity hasn’t been shared, went to a health clinic in the United Kingdom earlier this year for treatment. Unfortunately, that man didn’t get any treatment as both azithromycin and ceftriaxione failed to cure the disease.

The man says that he probably contracted the disease while he was visiting Souteast Asia. It was there that he says he had “sexual contact” with a local.

Health experts are now trying to find that mysterious sexual partner (and any other partners the man has had) in order to “contain the spread” of this dangerous strain of gonorrhea. All that we know so far is that he has a “regular female partner in the UK,” and that she later tested as negative.

We reported to you last year that antibiotic-resistant strains of gonorrhoea were becoming more common. Now, with 78 million people contracting the sexually transmited disease each year, the disease is quickly evolving past how we treat it.

The BBC says that things are looking “fairly grim” when it comes to these antibiotic-resistant strains and now there’s one that is completely untreatable? That said, health experts are again trying to contain the spread of this strain. On top of that, there are three new candidate drugs for the disease in development.
