Holden Nowell Was Uncomfortable Playing Gay
The guy who played the hot love interest in “Call Me Maybe” is now saying he was not comfortable playing the role (but he’s not homophobic).
Holden Nowell is the name of the man who won our hearts back in 2012. When “Call Me Maybe” hit the airwaves, the song was an instant hit. Then the music video hit the internet and tv screens, and we all fell in love with Nowell who was the center of Carly Rae Jepsen’s flirtations.
Even better, the twist of the video was that Nowell’s character ended up being gay.
But it seems that Nowell was not a fan of that direction and minimized the gayness as much as possible.
In a recent interview with iHeartRadio Canada, Nowell, who used to be a model and is now a rapper under the name SixXx’Tre, says that he was very uncomfortable with the gay role.
“The fact that they had to make me gay at the end of the video … it was all very … I didn’t like being known as the gay guy in the ‘Call Me Maybe’ video. It was just something I wasn’t used to.”
Nowell says that he would have had to kiss Jepsen’s guitar player, but he forced the scene in the direction of just giving the musician a phone number.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to be completely honest with you. I’m not going to kiss a guy, especially for $500.’ I said, ‘I really don’t think I’m comfortable kissing a guy for a music video.”
“I said, ‘You know what? What if instead of me kissing a guy at the end of the video, what if I just give a guy my number or something like that?’”
The rest is history, as they say. But, it was Holden Nowell himself who dug up that history, shone a negative light on it, and now is dealing with newsites running with it.
Of course, the writer at iHeart Radio had a major part in this news story spreading as well and he set the tone for it too. That’s something Nowell is very aware of and shared in a recent social media post.
On Instagram, Nowell posted John R Kennedy as the news source twisted his words to make him look like “a narcissistic – bitter – slanderous gay bashing – Hitler loving – free thinking – outspoken – “conspiracy theorist” who bags on his pops.”

But at the same time, Nowell states that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. And with all the news sites talking about him, he might be right.
